8 Ways to Travel on Budget in 2018

“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” says Anthony Bourdain, an avid foodie, a TV personality and a very successful travel documentarian. Sadly he passed away quite recently and the whole of traveling community mourns the loss of such a person but we are here today to honor his memory and tell you the best ways to travel on a budget

One of the most inconvenient parts of international travel is the exorbitant transaction and convenience fee some of the banks charge for using their cards internationally but you can Avoid paying foreign transaction fees with these cards, I personally prefer to use the Chase Saphire which is one of the best travel cards out there.

Top Ways to Travel on Budget in 2018

1. Check prices on Price comparison websites

Price comparison websites look very lucrative with those flashy offers pasted all over their website but it isn’t always the best option. When you use a price comparison portal to book your travel you may end up loosing on on a lot of extra freebies and necessary coverages like a bumper to bumper insurance coverage on car rentals or the opportunity to get upgraded to a better room because you chose the cheaper way to book, trust me this is very rampant in the travel industry and I have faced this issue personally myself.

I would recommend you to book hotel rooms or car rentals via the official website of the vendor and in most cases, you end up getting a better deal when you book directly especially in Asia.

2. Look for all inclusive packages

While it may seem like you will save up a considerable chunk of change if you buy all the components individually many a times an all inclusive package offers better value than buying individual components. Travel companies have tie-ups with the service providers which ensure that the person who is there through the package will have a better experience since they have to work again with the travel companies.

Sites like Groupon also offer discounted all inclusive packages which would help you travel on a budget.

3. Travel During the Offseason

Traveling during Off peak season is the best way to save some dough on your travels. If you visit any tourist destination before the beginning or just after the end of the peak season you will be able to enjoy the destination with a lot fewer tourists flocking all the main attractions.

If you are someone who prefers peace and tranquility during your travels then traveling during off peak is the best option for you. You can save up to 40% when you travel during the offseason.

4. Book in advance

If you know the period of your travel beforehand then try to book for it well in advance, if you book all your travels 60 days before your trip you can save about 25% to 30% whereas if you book 90 days in advance you can save a whopping 40% to 50%. This is the ultimate travel hack to travel on a budget.

Do ensure though that whatever you book allows you to reschedule at no or very low extra fees or you may end up paying unnecessary charges in case your schedule changes.

5. Cook your Own Meals and Select hotels with free breakfast

Book a studio apartment with an attached kitchen and save up a good chunk on meals, you can buy groceries from any local supermart which are easily available and you can save up about 15 to 20% of your total travel expenses if you cook your own meals.

If you don’t wish to cook your own means, make sure the hotels or accommodation you book gives you complimentary breakfasts thereby cutting down the expense of one meal every day. Breakfast is the most integral part of the day and in most cases, hotels have a great buffet spread for breakfast.

6. Pack Right, Travel light

One of the major expenses that weigh down travelers especially during international travels is the exorbitantly high excess baggage fees. Almost every airline charges you basically an arm and a leg as excess baggage fee and you can completely eliminate this unnecessary fee by just packing right and traveling light.

If you are going on a solo trip and you don’t have a lot of baggage with you, you can book flights that offer you only carry on baggage and you can save about 10 to 15% on your flight ticket if you choose a ticket with no checked in baggage.

7. Use Coupons and Discounts

If you are a student or a senior citizen odds are you will get a good discount at almost every tourist attraction you visit, you will also get discounts on a lot of food outlets and all these savings will add up so don’t forget to carry along your student ID when you travel.

You can also surf the web for any coupons available and a majority of times you will find something that will help you get a discount. You can also check various offers run by big hospitality companies which offer you free entry to their resorts or parks on your birthday. A quick 5 minute google search can save you a good amount of money on your next travel.

8. Use Public Transport

Many developed countries have a very well laid public transport system in place which is very easy to understand and easier to use, you can save up about 8% on your total trip when you use public transport instead of private taxis.

Some tourist destinations are notorious for their taxis and hence it is a lot safer and easier to just use public transport. I would recommend using the train system wherever possible as that is generally the best option.

9. Get a hotel with Free WiFi and Buy stuff from the convenience stores

Many countries have free fast unlimited wifi in their hotel rooms and getting a room with free wifi will save you money on a data pack for your international sim.

Buy things like soft drinks and beer from convenience stores as it is often times a lot cheaper than buying it from a restaurant or from your hotel minibar. These two things combined can save you about 5% on your total travel budget.
