It takes a very long time to establish a brand. It takes a longer time to establish a personal brand. Are you destroying your personal brand without even realizing it? The answer may surprise you.

This is the truth of the life and the faster you realize this the better you work on your personal brand. There are certain things that you may be currently doing which are indirectly sabotaging your personal brand. Here is a list of the thing to avoid when building or maintaining your personal brand.

1. Your Personal Brand and Self Promotion

A bit of modest self-promotion is required while building a personal brand and it is absolutely okay. What is not okay is if you become an endless self-promoter to push your brand forward. That is basically self-sabotage.

If you engage in over self-promotion, you risk losing your unique voice in the hoard of other voices. All of whom are lost in the advertising. The magic number is about 10% that’s it. 10% of self-promotion to 90% of the actual value you provide. You should always strive for that.

2. Your Personal Brand and Separation from Business

A lot of people confuse their business’ brand with their personal brand. This happens because they believe nothing can happen to their business.

Wrong, completely wrong. I hope nothing ever happens to your business but fate forbid something does and you risk losing everything you did to build your brand over the years,  in a moment.

3. Your Personal Brand and Commitment to Deliver (or the lack thereof)

I’ve seen a lot of people and even bigger brands over-promise and under-deliver; this is an unforgivable sin in the digital world. If you commit to something make sure to deliver on it at the right time. Come what may. Have a lot of content ready at your disposal so in case of an actual emergency you can have ready content waiting to be deployed as required.

If you promise your audience a new blog post every week, make sure you have at least 4 weeks worth of content already created, this helps build trust and credibility and these are 2 of the most important pillars your reputation stands on while building your brand.

4.  Your Personal Brand and your Social Media Habits

Social Media plays an integral role in building your brand and your social media habits may just be killing all the credibility you build. If you have used Social media for any period of time you know how easily a personal thought can turn into a heated debate and this hampers your personal brand as well.

My recommendation to anyone looking to build a personal brand would be to avoid any kind of posts that contain personal opinions or opinions which aren’t popular. Why do I say this? because I’m sure as heck someone will pop out of nowhere to irk you and start a debate, whenever you post about controversial topics.   

Always think, 5 years down the line, if someone reads this will it have any ramifications? Will it hamper any opportunity? If your answer is yes you know what to do.

5. Your Personal Brand and Goals

You are building your personal brand for a reason, it may be to improve your chances of getting a job or maybe to help push your business forward. To help with this you should have clear goals. Goals which are defined, measured and can be performed.

You can’t just say your goal is to become an influencer because the goal isn’t defined yet.

A goal without a plan is just a vision.

Make sure you have clear well-defined goals that are written down because if you see them every day you will keep pushing forward even on days you don’t want to.

Take time out from your activities to think about your goals and how you can follow them in a clear concise manner, this will not only help you get clarity on your goals but will also help you in knowing what to do and most importantly it will help you decide what not to do.
